Credentials

The experience that has best prepared me for editing work is the twelve years
I've
spent teaching thirteen different college writing, literature, and history
courses.
In that time I've read and graded approximately 4,080 papers (and this is a
conservative estimate, not counting rough drafts, short writing assignments,
essay tests, etc.). In addition:
* I edited the first edition of a college-level business text,
Gateway to Business.
* For the last six years I've been doing part-time freelance work for The
Thompson
Consulting Group- editing website materials, articles for banking publications,
and
conference materials.
* I hold an M.A. in History (GPA 4.0), M.A. in English (graduate with
honors, GPA
4.0), B.A. in English (GPA 3.95), and A.A. in Liberal Arts (GPA 3.57).
This
background has provided me with a broad knowledge of humanities-related topics
and,
of course, continual practice in writing and close reading of texts.
* I'm a published fiction writer, with stories featured in Feminista!: The
Journal
of Feminist Construction; Women Behaving Badly: Fifty Flash Fiction
Stories
(International Edition); and Blink: Stories in the
Blink of an Eye.
* I've written two M.A. theses: "Oswego's Irish Women Immigrants: 1855 and
1915,"
and "The Apollonian and Dionysian Spirits in Faulkner's Sanctuary."
* I worked as a tutor in a college writing lab, tutoring students of all
ages and
studying a variety of disciplines.
* I worked for a year as an independently-contracted tutor for the New
York State
Education Department of Vocational and Educational Services.
* I taught a GRE Verbal prep course.
* I taught SAT Verbal prep courses for two years.
* I've edited countless conference papers, academic articles, and magazine
articles
for colleagues.
FAQ

What is editing?
If you ask three different people this question, you're likely to get
three
different answers. For our purposes here, "editing" will mean any changes
I can
implement that will make your writing easier to read or understand. This
could be
anything from fixing simple grammar/punctuation/mechanics problems to working on
stylistic concerns like sentence length/structure, diction, and other
readability
issues.
What sorts of projects will I take on?
You name it and I can do it (and probably already have): resumes,
website
materials, personal writing projects (like family histories), articles for
publication, etc. If you're interested in learning how to improve
your own
writing, or if you're a high school or college student looking for help on
a
specific assignment, I can diagnose your writing problems and help you learn how
to
recognize and correct them.
How will the process work?
1) Send queries to the e-mail link on this page. In your email, describe
your
project (or send a copy to me) and answer these questions: How many pages
is it?
How much time do you have to complete it? Who will read it? What
outcome are you
aiming for, or what point do you hope to make?
2) I'll read your email and let you know how much work the project will entail,
and
I'll email you with a fee quote.
3) If you accept the fee quote, I'll begin working on your project right away,
and
will return it to you via email as soon as possible.
Rates
I'll assess the amount of work involved in each project (assessment free of
charge)
and charge rates accordingly. If you'd like to find out more about the
"going" rates for editing see
http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/45813. Once you accept my
fee quote, together we'll arrive at a method of payment that's most convenient
for
both parties.
